Highlights include To Be Determined, an exhibition developed during our closure through collaboration among our entire curatorial team. Featuring works from every department of our collection, the exhibition showed how, across history, art has conveyed hope and resilience.
The DMA organized the first US museum solo exhibitions for Chris Schanck, a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, and for Julian Charrière, a Berlin-based artist whose powerful work bridges the realms of environmental science and cultural history.
We acquired 333 works during this fiscal year. These included 59 works on paper, paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts bequeathed to the Museum by Henry H. Hawley; the Reverend Isaac V. and Alicia C. Pérez Mola Collection of Panamanian textiles, gifted to the DMA by The Kaleta A. Doolin Foundation; Four Brown Chairs, a painting by Dallas-based artist Jammie Holmes commissioned for the exhibition To Be Determined; Sheila Hicks’s Chaine et trame interchangeable, originally commissioned in the 1980s to hang in the lobby of the One Main Place building in Downtown Dallas; five paintings by Alex Katz, gifted to the Museum by the artist; Curbed Vanity by Chris Schanck, a commissioned work inspired by the Gorham Manufacturing Company’s 1899 dressing table, an icon of our decorative arts collection; site-specific works by Ini Archibong, Matt Checkowski, Steven Ladd and William Ladd, and Yuri Suzuki commissioned for the DMA exhibition speechless: different by design; Frederick Carl Frieseke’s Woman Before a Mirror; and a group of bogolanfini textiles, dye-decorated mud cloths, created by the Bamana peoples of Mali.
We developed digital and on-site programs to safely and creatively connect with our visitors and followers amid ever-evolving conditions. We hosted 2,397 education and community outreach programs and served 124,283 people, including families, teens, English Language Learners, refugees, and people of all abilities. We distributed more than 18,200 free Art Kits at the Museum and in locations throughout the city. Arts & Letters Live hosted over 45 virtual events with award-winning authors and performers, counting attendees from over four countries, 48 states and Puerto Rico. In June we honored Pride Month as part of the Dallas Arts District’s Pride Party+ celebration; we hosted 3,802 on-site attendees and 4,574 digital attendees for programs including tours, film screenings, and talks with local artists.
The DMA belongs to a dynamic Dallas arts scene filled with stories to tell—and we were proud to amplify these stories. As the city’s art museum, the DMA takes great pride in reflecting the aspirations of our growing and global communities, from the art and artists in our collection, to the staff, trustees, volunteers, and visitors of the Museum. While we navigate and embrace institutional change, we are driven by a commitment to fostering connection, creativity, and exceptional art experiences for all.

We not only provided our visitors with the rare chance to see works by the iconic Mexican painter in Frida Kahlo: Five Works, but we brought the exhibition out to the community with experiential pop-up spots. Encouraged by the years’ events to think beyond the walls of the Museum, we ensured that all exhibitions that opened during the 2020–2021 fiscal year were accessible for anyone, anywhere, to view on virtual.dma.org, with dedicated webpages that featured a virtual tour and rich additional content.
